Landowners
The following video will help you with the best way to plant trees.
Type of Property
Privately or organisation/company-owned.
Farms of most types are suitable, including livestock and crops.
Lifestyle properties are suitable.
Other land uses may be suitable.
Land for Wildlife property registration is recommended.
Note: we don’t plant trees that will eventually be cut down. So no agro-forestry projects, no planting on sites in suburban development zones, no future mine sites.
Property Features
Our koala tree plantings are mostly along river banks, streams, creeks drainage lines, dams, and billabongs, both natural and man-made.
We consider the presence /absence of known koala sightings on or nearby the property. We primarily plant to ensure the survival of koala food trees. We will offer plantings of shelter trees, shrubs and nurse plants, to benefit the koala food trees. We prioritise properties that provide much needed connection between existing koala habitats.
Protection from livestock
and wild animals
Newly-planted trees must be protected from livestock by fencing, and from wild animals by tree guards.
If you have livestock and the planting site is not fenced off, it will need to be before planting. This cost is expected to be borne by the landowner.
Tree guards will be supplied if required and remain the property of KAGR. We recycle these guards & stakes after two years.
Landowner/farm manager involvement
To ensure everyone has a clear idea of the plan and process, we a arrange for a regenerator to visit the property before planting at a time of your choosing.
KAGR will produce site maps, tree species lists and numbers of plants, and will order trees. Landowners/managers will be expected to sign a Landowner Agreement before any work begins.
Preparation and planting work will be discussed at the meeting with the regenerator.
If your property is deemed suitable, we will arrange a community planting with volunteers if you are agreeable.
On the planting day we prefer that you are present for the first hour at least to help ensure the works proceed in a manner you are happy with. Follow up maintenance will be discussed with the regenerator.
What we don’t do
We don’t plant non-native plants – we plant suitable indigenous native trees & shrubs only.
We only plant for environmental benefit, and trees and shrubs are selected in accordance to the regional ecosystem on your land.
For example, we won’t plant more trees into a site that already has enough, or where existing trees are struggling to survive.
We don’t generally prefer roadside, fence line & driveway plantings – we only consider these if the roadside, fence line or driveway runs along a riverbank or drainage line, if it provides an important corridor to another planting or existing habitat, and if the road is not a busy one.
We don’t plant a site if livestock is still present around the trees, if the site is not prepared properly, if weed management has not had time to take effect (weed management should be done 4 to 6 weeks before planting), or if a site is dangerous to our staff or participants.
Koala Action Gympie Region has a plan to KEEP koalas in our area with their new PEEK program. This became urgent with the upgrading of koalas from vulnerable to endangered by both the Federal and State Governments in early 2022.
Since 2018 we have encouraged the planting of koala food trees and habitat on private land within Gympie region by providing trees for landholders through various grants including the Gympie Regional Council Environment grants. We initially started this program because most koalas in the region are sighted on private properties. Since that time, we have provided over 10,000 trees for plantings to landholders. You may have seen our signs on properties around the region.
Your property will be assessed by a qualified regenerator for suitability including types of trees, best area for planting and number of trees that are able to be managed by the landholder. The initial assessment will cost the property owner $100 and then after that the planting will be fully funded including the cost of trees and the cost of planting.
The Peek Project is only available to KAGR members. We would love you to join us. All compulsory fields must be completed. All new applicants will receive individual assessments of their properties and complete a planting agreement prior to proceeding.
For previous recipients, please just send us an email with what you would like this coming year.
